Vermont
Technical College's "Women in Technology" camp is aimed at teaching
girls about different aspects of math and science. There are four different
workshops: Webpage Building, Solar Powered Cars,
City Vision, and Bridge Building. During the
girl's stay, they sleep in dorms in Keenan Hall. Girls get two hours of
each workshop in the morning, and an hour and a half each in the afternoon,
and there are four days.
Girls may take two of the four workshops; one for Session One, the other
for Session Two.
Webpage
building is where campers get the chance to learn hypertext markup language-
more commonly known as HTML. They use HTML to create a page full of images,
animations, font styles (and colors), and how to make links to other pages,
amongst other things. Girls will present their pages online on the last
day.
The solar powered cars workshop is where girls get to make a solar powered
car that will run with wires and motors, but will use a battery when cloudy.
Using a variety of materials for axles, frame, and a number of gear sizes,
the girls have three days to make their car, and on the last day "Let the
races begin!!!" as the girls race their cars.
In City Vision, campers make a city out of a variety of materials, including
foamcore, boxes, and styrofoam for buildings. The layout (the ground) was
made from paper and construction paper. Campers glued construction paper
to the paper to make the layout. Each camper got to name their own street,
and the layout included roads, rivers, bridges, orchards, and a park. Campers
worked backwards, doing blueprints last.
For the final workshop, campers built bridges out of balsa wood. Using
Exacto knives, campers constructed all kinds of bridges, such as suspension
bridges. They learned about the many types of bridges used in life today,
and will be showing off their works of art on the final day of camp.
