Assignment 8
Special Views and Sculpted Forms

As usual, create a new folder for your work using your full_name and located in V:\MEC\1011\Fall_10\Assignment8/Tx (where Tx is T2 or T3).

Concept Sketch:

Sketch the design of a part or assembly that will call for the use of various special views on the working drawing(s) including: section (L&J p. 146, 492), auxiliary (L&J p. 148, 490), detail, and broken. Also, include some sculpted form. If you can accomplish all that with one part, thatís fine. Sketch freehand on plain 8 Ĺ x 11 paper using any combination of orthographic or isometric views. Include a title at the top, some reference to size, material, how it will work (purpose may be ridiculous) and how it will be made. Include your name, signature and the date.

Artistís Rendering:

Take a crack at drawing what the design would look like in its environment. Use tone (shading) in place of line to avoid abstraction. Include shadows. Use pencil on plain 8 Ĺ x 11 paper.

Working Drawing(s):

Use SolidWorks to produce a complete set of working drawings (parts and assemblies as necessary) for your design. Include all views necessary for clarity (consider isometric). Further:

1.    Include a multi-sheet drawing.

2.    Fully dimension* (L&J p. 139, 500 and see rules in Figure 12.48), but do not over dimension (reference dimensions are welcome).

3.    Tolerance (remember angles and centerlines) including bilateral, unilateral, limit, decimal place (L&J p. 514-516), geometric (L&J p. 524) and surface finish control (L&J p. 540).

4.    Use A-size sheets, standard title block (with drawing scale, etc.) and border, and add all pertinent notes (like material and donít forget visual inspection if applicable).

*presuming that thereís a sculpted form somewhere in your design, that portion will not be dimensionable. Instead, use a leader to reference your computer model by name and location (see L&J Fig 6.8). Dimension all dimensionable geometry.
