MEC 1011 - Design Communication I
Assignment 1

Due at the end of our First meeting in Week 2
All items drawn with pencil on
8 1/2 x 11 paper

  1. Together in class we’ll construct folded paper models of the first-angle and third-angle projection systems. Include three views of a simple object, projection lines, and title, name. etc. (turn them in flat). Ref. L&J p. 124 or http://wps.prenhall.com/chet_giesecke_techdraw_13/98/25120/6430810.cw/index.html
  2. Produce a concept sketch of a one-part paper weight (avoid complexity that would prevent completion of items 3 and 4). Include general and specific notes (Ref. L&J p. 101). Also include a title at the top, some reference to size, material, how it will work and how it will be made (include production volume). Sign and date it.
  3. Use the graph paper utility to produce a rectangular grid for orthographic construction (or print this file by pasting path into windows explorer: V:\MEC\1011\Fall_10\Ortho_graph_paper.bmp). Draw on the side opposite the printed lines (with a plain sheet underneath, the lines will show through and guide you). Produce a complete working drawing (to any convenient scale) of your paper weight. Include views, projection lines (lightly), a ‘miter’ line, dimensions, tolerances, title block (with scale), border, and pertinent notes. Ref. L&J Ch 4 and 12 or, for a presentation of what a miter line is,

  1. Use the graph paper utility to produce a pattern of triangles for isometric construction (select polygon patterns/triangles or print this file by pasting path into windows explorer: V:\MEC\1011\Fall_10\Iso_graph_paper.bmp). Produce an isometric view (to any convenient scale) of the paper weight. Ref. L&J p. 87
